The
Story of Islam
DVD
In the year 600 A.D. a wind swept across
the Arabian desert, where, in the little town called Mecca, an i
lliterate orphan named Muhammad came to be the prophet to whom the word
of God was revealed- and the world as change d forever. Herein lies the
beginning of the faith known as Islam, a religion... |
Lion
of the Desert
DVD ~ Anthony Quinn
Destined to remain a dubious footnote in books of movie trivia,
this occasionally impressive epic from 1981 was financed with a budget
of $35 million by Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi, who previously
attempted the role of movie producer with the critically roasted
Mohammad: Messenger of God. |
The
Wind and the Lion
DVD ~ Sean Connery
The up-and-down career of director John Milius had no finer
moment than The Wind and the Lion, a dandy adventure tale. It's
based on fact: An American (played by Candice Bergen) and her two
children were kidnapped in 1904 Morocco by a Berber tribe, an
international incident settled by President... |
The
Battle of Algiers - Criterion Collection
DVD ~ Brahim Haggiag
Director Gillo Pontecorvo's 1966 movie The Battle of Algiers
concerns the violent struggle in the late 1950s for Algerian
independence from France, where the film was banned on its release for
fear of creating civil disturbances. Certainly, the heady,
insurrectionary mood of the film, enhanced by a... |

Khartoum
DVD ~ Charlton Heston
Set in the expanse of the Sudan desert in the midst of holy war,
Khartoum (1966) plays like an attempt to work the Lawrence of
Arabia magic on the (mostly) true story of eccentric British general
Charles "Chinese" Gordon in 1884 North Africa. The magnificent opening
desert battle suggests David...

Osama
Author: Siddiq Barmak;
I would like to alert
whoever reads this review to the fact that this film has nothing at all
to do with Osama bin Laden. Evidently, Osama happens a fairly common
boy's name in Afghanistan, and the name was chosen for the subject of
this film for that reason. There isn't even a subtext or commentary
about Osama bin Laden, as will become quite clear if you take time to
view the terrific," Sharing Hope and Freedom" interview with the
director, Siddiq Barmak. The interview is included on the DVD, in the
"Bonus Features" section.
Right at the beginning of the film, a quote from Nelson Mandela is
shown. The quote is "I cannot forget, but I can forgive." I have been
trying to think of exactly why this quote is placed right at the
beginning of the film, and all I can think is that it could be to
provide a contrasting vision of what spirituality COULD be like, when
it's not twisted beyond all recognition by the Taliban. |

World / Mondo Cane 2 / Africa Addio - English Version / Africa Addio -
Directors' Cut / Goodbye Uncle Tom - English Version / Addio Zio Tom -
Director's Cut / The Godfathers of Mondo
Author: Gualtiero Jacopetti;
MONDO CANE is the original 'Shockumentary' sensation
that launched the entire 'Mondo' genre, as well as its notorious hit
sequels WOMEN OF THE WORLD and MONDO CANE 2. AFRICA ADDIO - here in both
its devastating English version and rarely seen Director's cut - is the
horrific portrait of the Dark Continent that ignited an international
political firestorm. GOODBYE UNCLE TOM - and its even more incendiary
Director's Cut - are perhaps the filmmakers' most controversial works,
an epic depiction of the American slave trade and its brutal legacy that
remain Among the most racially charged films ever made.
