"It was music that first stirred my soul early on. From playing my first drum at three to teaching hand drumming to students as an adult, I've always felt the beat. The three drums have a rhythm, drawn together on a long sheet of paper. Each drum stands in support of the other. I prayed to be open to the possibilities. This was to be a collaboration of Soul and Spirit, a visual rhythm. One source of inspiration from the Sounds of Blackness, 'The Drum' states:

" In the beginning was the beat
And the beat was the rhythm of God
And the rhythm of God is the harmony of humanity
And where there is harmony there is peace
The goblet-shaped Djembe would be the first drum, Expression of the Motherland.
The second drum, the Djun Djun (bass drum), is entitled The Birthplace of the Human Race. This is the image of Mother Africa, whose continent bears a profile of her. Its contrasting image symbolizes the first human, Lucy, the mother of all humankind. Cassandra Wilson's "Children of the Night" inspired this piece.
The third piece, The Spirit of Africa, is represented by Ashiko (long drum). I conceived of the elephant's trunk as the first horn. Words that inspired this piece are from the song "African Medley" by the Sounds of Blackness:
kingdoms & power and majesty yet remain
beautiful kingdoms -- their royal blood flows through our veins
beautiful kingdom -- alive in us, waiting to ascend
marvelous kingdoms -- call for us to build them again"

Reflection Eternal/Train of Thought
Talib Kweli, Hi Tek
Talib Kweli is probably the only MC who could do justice to "For Women," Nina Simone's righteous, ragged battle cry, and he does so with his cover on Reflection Eternal. That cut illustrates this album's timeless quality, its personal poeticism, and its strength. Kweli's lyrical skills have only improved over time, approaching the stuff of legend. And producer Hi-Tek's supple grooves balance the wordcraft perfectly. --Lizz Mendez Berry

African Culture: The Rhythyms of Unity (Contributions in Afro-American and African Studies)
Molefi Kete Asante - Africa, according to the contributors to this anthology, is "one cultural river with numerous tributaries articulated by their specific responses to history and the environment." They concentrate on the similarities in behavior, perceptions, and technologies of African culture that tie those tributaries together. The fourteen original essays by leading scholars of African studies are organized in four general divisions which consider the ethno-cultural motif, the artistic tradition, concepts of cultural value, and cultural continua.

The African Aesthetic : Keeper of the Traditions
Kariamu Welsh-Asante;
While the field of aesthetics has long been dominated by European philosophy, recent inquiries have expanded the arena to accommodate different cultures as well as different definitions. In this volume, scholars and teachers in the fields of African and African American studies advance the debate over the nature of African aesthetics, approaching the subject from a broad range of disciplines. Dance, music, art, theatre, and literature are examined in order to appreciate and delineate the specific qualities and aspects of African aesthetics; additionally, theoretical concepts and issues are discussed to define more clearly the meaning of an "African aesthetic."
