Africa: Africa World Press Guide to Educational Resources from and About Africa
Author: Worldviews;
This indispensable tool provides a breadth and depth of resources for anyone interested in understanding the changing and complex reality that is Africa today. To many outside the continent, Africa appears to be remote and inaccessible. But this doesn't have to be so. The print and audiovisual resources gathered together in this directory demonstrate that there are many ways to access this huge and diverse continent.

Educating about Africa demands a heightened sensitivity to the abundance of misinformation and stereotypes that cloud perceptions of Africa's nations and peoples. We encourage readers to contact the outreach centers at local colleges or universities for help in evaluating Africa-related print and audiovisual educational resources.

An African Biographical DictionaryAn African Biographical Dictionary
Author: Norbert C. Brockman;
... work covers all areas and time periods of Africa, from Queen Hatshepsut of ancient Egypt to Nelson Mandela, and is divided into ten general categories (e.g., those who resisted the imposition of colonialism). Given its historical bent, it complements Rake's Who's Who in Africa: Leaders for the 1990s (LJ 6/1/92), which lists current leaders. Collections seeking a strictly historical emphasis may wish to consider Mark Lipschutz and Kent Rasmussen's Dictionary of African Historical Biography (Univ. of California Pr., 1986. 2d ed.) or Makers of Modern Africa (Africa Books, 1991. 2d ed. o.p.); although their coverage stops earlier than Rake's, they include more names. Brockman's dictionary, on the other hand, excludes North Africa and Egypt while listing 549 names and emphasizing the postcolonial period. Entries are arranged alphabetically.

Personalities

nyerereAfricans or people of African descent who have influenced the course of African or world history, who have resisted slavery and colonization, fought for Africa's liberation, against racism, and for an African renaissance. These people deserve to be known throughout the world, not only by Africans or a few historians. This database intends to collect biographies and material on these famous or unknown Africans, yet, it does not claim to be complete.

For information on individual African personalities, see An African Biographical Dictionary (Brockman 1994). This is the most comprehensive and up-to-date reference directory available on more than 550 African men and women from all walks of lif e (along with sketches of some "influential" non-Africans). Emphasis is given to the postcolonial contemporary period, with about two-thirds of the alphabetically arranged entries dating from 1950 on. Other reference volumes of this nature include
