The Temple of Man represents the most important breakthrough in our understanding of Ancient Egypt since the discovery of the Rosetta Stone. This exhaustive study reveals in words, art, and photographs the mathematical, medical, and metaphysical sophistication of Ancient Egypt. Kemet,
Afrocentricity and Knowledge
Molefi K. Asante
Asante's book Kemet, Afrocentricity, and Knowledge continues his project of forging a new discipline out of the many strands of Black Studies. Like his previous works, this is a profound statement of the Afrocentric perspective.
"Kemet, Afrocentricity and Knowledge", is compared with the
movie "Amistad" .Similarities between the two movies are discussed and some
discrepancies between the two only slightly arise. History and its relation to
racism are discussed and compared. Asante stands as a pillar against racism
and "Amistad" is shown as a related example even in the mainstream of
Hollywood.
Molefi Kente Asante is the author of 34 books, including
The Afrocentric Idea, Afrocentricity, and Kemet, Afrocentricity and Knowledge.
He is the founder of the first African studies program offering a doctorate
degree and is credited with coining the term Afrocentricity. He lives in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The Egyptian Philosophers:
Ancient African Voices from Imhotep to
Akhenaten
Molefi Kete
Asante
Since the 18th century, Greece has been heralded as the cradle of Western
civilization, with Plato, Pythagoras, and Thales touted as the world's
first philosophers. But as Temple University scholar Molefi Kete Asante
writes in this slim, spectacular book, those men all studied in ancient
Egypt and took credit for the concepts created by Imhotep, Ahmenhotep,
Akhenaton, and other Egyptian intellectuals, scientists, theologians, and
moralists.
'The practice of the African philosophers along the Nile was a practice
of maintaining Maat [the principle of truth, order, and justice] in every
aspect of life,' he writes. 'If we could only learn from them the value of
harmony, balance, and righteousness, we would be on our way toward a
revival of the spirit of human victory.'
The
Neteru of Kemet:
An Introduction
Tamara
Siuda-Legan
A
short (80-page) illustrated workbook introducing 13 of the Names of Netjer,
it is a useful beginner's reference to Netjer and Kemetic religion. Includes
hymns and meditations. If you
are looking for a good introductory book to the Gods of ancient Egypt, The
Neteru of Kemet is the best I have read. The author is a graduate student of
ancient religions and a priestess of the House of Netjer. Thus, she writes
of the Gods (Neteru) with both scholarly background and personal experience.
This combination gives her material that sense of truth so often lacking in
other recent books on this subject.
Conceptions of God in Ancient Egypt:
The One and the Many
Erik
Hornung
A thought-provoking look at the philosophy behind
Kemetic religion, Kemetic concepts of Deity, and their contribution to
the development of other world religions and philosophies, masterfully
translated from the original. Not for beginners. Very highly
recommended.
Akhenaten and the Religion of Light
Erik
Hornung
Akhenaton, also known as Amenhotep IV, was king of
Egypt during the Eighteenth Dynasty and reigned from 1375 to 1358 b.c.
Called the "religious revolutionary," he is the earliest known creator of a
new religion. The cult he founded broke with Egypt's traditional polytheism
and focused its worship on a single deity, the sun god Aten. Erik Hornung,
one of the world's preeminent Egyptologists, here offers a concise and
accessible account of Akhenaton and his religion of light.
The Teachings of Ptahhotep:
The World's Oldest Book
Asa G., Iii
Hilliard
This is a translated version of one of the oldest books in the world.
Discovered in Egypt, it is said to be the first piece of wisdom written down
and documented. This book contains proper ways on how to live your life, and
respect for others and the things around you. Made well before the bible,
this book will amaze you with some of the teachings that it puts forth; you
will soon start to see where a lot of philosophy today comes from.

A Dictionary of Egyptian Gods and Goddesses
George Hart
An encyclopedic look at the Names of Netjer in alphabetical order. Not
exhaustive by any means, but handy, easily accessible and better than
Budge.
Blacks in Antiquity:
Ethiopians in the Greco-Roman Experience
Frank M.
Snowden
An excellent treatment of the subject of Africans,
including ancient Egyptians, in the classical Mediterranean world: their
function and expression in Greco-Roman history, their contributions to
classical culture, etc. An important and often overlooked subject.
Chronicle of
the Pharaohs:
The Reign-By-Reign Record of the Rulers and Dynasties of Ancient Egypt
With 350 Illustrations 130 in Color
Peter A.
Clayton
Exactly as the title suggests, this coffee-table
book is a perfect crash course in Kemetic history, going through the
lines of rulers from the shadowy Horus Qaa, Scorpion and Nar-mer to the
last of the Ptolemies, Cleopatra VII. Plenty of pictures, charts and
information for any Egyptophile, and remarkably error-free for a
mass-market book. Highly recommended.

Maat, the Moral Ideal in Ancient Egypt: A Study in Classical African
Ethics (Africanstudies-History, Politics, Economics and Culture)Maulana Karenga
This work is a critical examination of Maat, the moral
ideal in ancient Egypt. It seeks to present Maat in the language of
modern moral discourse while at the same time preserving and building
on its distinctiveness as a moral ideal capable of inspiring and
maintaining ethical philosophic reflection. The effort here is one of
both interpretation and transmission of an ethical tradition, a
project in which tradition is seen not simply as a precondition and
process in which one comes, but also as an ongoing product of one's
efforts to understand it.

Selections from the Husia: Sacred Wisdom of Ancient EgyptMaulana Karenga Dr. Maulana Karenga, the founder of Kwanzaa, has put together a very good collection of Kemetic texts in the Husia, (a word Karenga coined from Hu and Sia, the two guardians of Ra) an anthology of ancient Egyptian wisdom texts, hymns and other spiritual works. As part of Dr. Karenga's project to create one central source for African spirituality texts, this book is a wonderful addition to any Kemetic or African or spiritual/religious library. |
|
Raymond Faulkner The title says it all: a retranslation and new presentation of Papyrus Ani, in the correct sequence and with the reproductions of the papyrus corresponding to where the words are. Corrects many of Budge's mistakes, and has wondrous commentary. A must for any Kemetic library. |
Raymond Oliver Faulkner Before the Book of the Dead and the Coffin Texts, there were the Pyramid Texts, enigmatic funerary formulas for the transition of the deceased Old Kingdom ruler into the afterworld. These are some of Kemet's oldest surviving religious texts. |
