Black Women in Antiquity |

The Black Women's Health Book:
Speaking for Ourselves
Evelyn C. White;

has been expanded to include 11 additional essays. Contributors include such
notables as Zora Neale Hurston, Lucille Clifton, Marian Wright Edelman, bell
hooks, and Toni Morrison. Topics include suicide, midwives, the politics of
black women's health, sexual abuse, domestic violence, and a host of others.
Much of the material is written from a personal point of view, and all of the
authors passionately express their particular concerns.
Sisters of the Yam
by
bell hooks
The noted author of Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism ( LJ
12/1/81) and Black Looks: Race and Represen tation ( LJ 7/92) takes a
down-to-earth appproach to the process of self-actualization. An avid fan of
self-help literature and a professor of African American studies, hooks summons
the perspectives of both these disciplines to address the concerns of victims of
institutionalized racism, sexism, and capitalist oppression. The title captures
the yam's status as "a life-sustaining symbol of black kinship and community" as
well as being the name of the author's campus support group.

No Disrespect
SISTER SOULJAH;
Each chapter of No Disrespect is devoted to someone who made a difference in Sister Souljah's life -- from the mother who raised her to the men who educated (and mis-educated) her about love -- and each bares a controversial truth about the black condition in America: the disintegration of families; the unremitting combat between the sexes; and the thousand and one ways in which racism continues to circumscribe the ways African American people see themselves and treat one another. The result is an outspoken and often outrageous rejoinder to the pieties of race, class, and gender by a writer who can be wise, bawdy, brutally funny, and as sensitive as a lightning rod in a thunderstorm.

The Keys to the Colors
Frances Cress Welsing;
It has been one of my greatest satisfactions to have met Sister Welsing and to
have read this riveting book which has proven to me that I and my people are the
GREATEST! and that to think otherwise is to deny oneself that greatness.For many
people who have the insight and the willingness to read the book it cannot help
but to open the eyes of those still sleeping in their superficial superiority.
This will also if the readers are willing to accept the unmitigating truth
possibly awaken RIP VAN WINKLE from the stone age.

Sacred Pampering Principles
With her holistic approach to filling your life with comfort, balance, and peace, Debrena Jackson Gandy debunks society's myth that doing something for yourself is decadent and selfish. In fact, she says, the joy we gain from treating ourselves--whether to a luxuriant bath or to a meditative hour alone--is transferred to the people in our lives. When we emerge rejuvenated, others benefit from a patient mother, a fulfilled wife, an effective coworker, a solidly grounded friend. Written for African-American women, but accessible to women of all races, Sacred Pampering Principles demonstrates not only pampering ideas |

Woman
to Woman
Martha J. Ross-Rodgers;
Woman to Woman is a book about women and
their relationships.There are far too many women whose main purpose in life is
to fulfill all of their man's desires, while neglecting their own spiritual,
mental, and physical needs. When their needs and wants go untouched, then theses
women develop the saying, "all men are dogs." No, all men are not dogs." There
are a lot of good men out there. What is occurring is that too many women are
making bad choices upon entering into a relationships. We, as females, need to
learn that only when we value ourselves can we value anyone else. How can you
place such a high value on a man while ignoring your needs and wants ? Are you
not as important?Woman to Woman will help you to define the three W's - who you
are , what you want in a relationship , and where you are headed.
