Black Womyn

"We should make sure that Black women know and understand that we are the mothers of creation.  All civilization emerged from our wombs.  Cosmic energy emerged from the earth as well as our wombs.  The Dawn of human civilization started in Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, in a totally tropical area, approximately 6 million years ago.  This area is known as the Cradle of Civilization.  This was fertile ground for human development.  Many human-like beings lived along Lake Turkana.  This is near where the oldest fossil remains of an African woman, Dagnesh or Dinkinesh, was found.  Dagnesh means “beautiful woman” in the Amharic language of Ethiopia.  All of the human family descended from her lineage.  Each human being on earth has the genetic code of at least five African women."  - Sis. Our Price:
$24.95
Based on in-depth interviews with hundreds of women ages 18 to 80 and fascinating case histories from her life experience and clinical practice, Dr. Gail Elizabeth Wyatt arrives at a major new understanding of sex and the black woman. It begins in the distant past, even before we were stolen from our homelands...forced into slavery...robbed of our dignity and our ability to choose our mates. It lives deep within us in powerful myths that label us as selfess parodies of the mammies of old, wanton "she-devils" or "hot mamas," or workhorses, "mules of the world" with no needs of our own.

From Booknews: Drawing on interviews with middle-aged women six to nine months after their mothers had died, examines the bereavement experience, the personal meaning of the loss, its impact on family systems and the community, and sociocultural factors that influence efforts to cope with grief and loss. The findings suggest the idealization of the mothers in personal and community contexts, reciprocity in the relationship as a predictor of guilt in grief, and the centrality of orphanhood and motherhood to the family and community. Revised from a 1996 doctoral dissertation for the University of Pennsylvania. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

Crossing the Boundary:
Black Women Survive Incest

Melba Wilson

Our Price:
$12.95 Paperback, 238pp

Touted as the "first book about black women and incest to be published in the United States," Wilson's treatise was inspired by her own heretofore unresolved incest experience. Noting the lack of literature devoted to this particular subject and the scarcity of support groups among black female survivors, Wilson felt compelled to share both the tragedy and the triumph in her own personal history. Her narrative also explores the mythology about black women's sexuality, repudiates the code of silence common in black society, analyzes the theme of incest in the works of black women authors, and provides an encouraging framework for those struggling to cope with their own feelings of shame, anger, and guilt. A cathartic survival guide for black women.

Book Cover Sisters of the Yam
by bell hooks
The noted author of Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism ( LJ 12/1/81) and Black Looks: Race and Represen tation ( LJ 7/92) takes a down-to-earth appproach to the process of self-actualization. An avid fan of self-help literature and a professor of African American studies, hooks summons the perspectives of both these disciplines to address the concerns of victims of institutionalized racism, sexism, and capitalist oppression. The title captures the yam's status as "a life-sustaining symbol of black kinship and community" as well as being the name of the author's campus support group.

Helpmates, Harlots, and Heroes
by Alice Ogden Bellis
Bellis is a master of the tools of biblical interpretation, with considerable skills in Semitic languages. Drawing on contemporary scholarship, both feminist and "womanist" (the "banner under which black feminists celebrate their unique identity"), she compares modern interpretation of well-known figures like Rachel and Rebekah ("active and strong women") and the also-rans like Susanna and especially Judith ("one of the strongest heroes in all Jewish literature"). Above all, Bellis is a teacher; this work contains religious education aids, including discussion questions and extensive notes and bibliographies. Truly a labor of love, this work is highly recommended for religion and women's studies collections

Souls of My Sisters

Pointing to the recent discovery that "black women have among the highest rates of depression in the country," they perceive a need for African-American women to do some serious soul-searching. Early in the book, they ask readers to examine themselves through three simple words: Who am I? From there, they set readers on the path to self-discovery through poetry and soul-baring prose, with numerous, luminous African-American women lighting the path.

Michael Porter;

Autobiography As Activism
by Margo V. Perkins
Where autobiographies are popular and race and gender studies have strong appeal, this demanding but thought-provoking analysis of the autobiographies of Angela Davis, Assata Shakur, and Elaine Brown will find readers. English and American Studies professor Perkins approaches her subjects' compositions from several different directions: comparing the three women's backgrounds and personal objectives; outlining their literary antecedents; discussing experiences each writer views as critical in her decision to be an activist; considering each autobiographer's pedagogical and polemical goals in telling her story

Afrikan Mothers:
Bearers of Culture, Makers of Social Change

Nah Dove
This book highlights the integrity of some Afrikan mothers who, under European domination within the United States and the United Kingdom, have used their own experience as a foundation for understanding the impact of cultural imposition on their children's lives. Most of these mothers have chosen to place their children in school environments that will educate their children about their cultural roots, in order that their cultural memory and knowledge of Afrikan people will be handed down intergenerationally.

Ain't I A Woman
by bell hooks

Hooks lays groundwork in the early chapters of "Ain't I A Woman" which make her later analysis of modern race/gender politics perfectly astute. She starts with a discussion of slavery and its impact on not only the men and women slaves, but the social hierarchy of white women. In so doing, she effectively argues that since our society is a patriarchy--and specifically, a white-dominated patriarchy--feminism has ignored black women's needs in favor of the white women who, in order to maintain their position in the patriarchal power structure, must (even as they give lip-service to "independence") make sure that their movement does not alienate the group which controls that power structure--namely, white men. Bell hooks' riveting style of writing and her clear, articulate arguments, have given me a tremendous new understanding of how our society works, and a glimpse of what it will take to help change it. I highly recommend this book.

Book CoverNo Disrespect
SISTER SOULJAH;

Rapper, activist, and hip-hop rebel, Sister Souljah possesses the most passionate and articulate voice to emerge from the projects. Now she uses that unmistakable voice to deliver what is at once a fiercely candid autobiography and a survival manual for any African American woman who wants to keep her heart open and her integrity intact in 1990s America.

Each chapter of No Disrespect is devoted to someone who made a difference in Sister Souljah's life -- from the mother who raised her to the men who educated (and mis-educated) her about love -- and each bares a controversial truth about the black condition in America: the disintegration of families; the unremitting combat between the sexes; and the thousand and one ways in which racism continues to circumscribe the ways African American people see themselves and treat one another. The result is an outspoken and often outrageous rejoinder to the pieties of race, class, and gender by a writer who can be wise, bawdy, brutally funny, and as sensitive as a lightning rod in a thunderstorm.

Causes, Conditions and Future Implications

Catherine Fisher Fisher Collins
The plight of imprisoned African American women is detailed in this study. It is apparent that the nation's prison systems are ill-equipped to meet the basic needs of the ever-growing female population, and that government has done very little to address the underlying causes of crime. Child care, medical conditions, the historical plight of incarcerated African American women, alternatives to prisons and future trends are also covered. The primary research is supported by the author's survey of prison populations.
