Africa's Quest for a
Philosophy of Decolonization
This book discovers freedom in the colonial idea of African primitiveness. As
human transcendence, freedom escapes the drawbacks of otherness, as defended by
ethnophilosophy, while exposing the idiosyncratic inspiration of Eurocentric
universalism. Decolonization calls for the reconnection with freedom, that is,
with myth-making understood as the inaugural act of cultural pluralism. The
cultural condition of modernization emerges when the return to the past deploys
the future.
The Afrocentric Paradigm This book focuses on the intellectual dimension of Afrocentricity, which has aroused a great deal of interest since its inception, but has remained clouted with theoretical confusion. Writing from an Afrocentric perspective, the contributors to the volume argue that Afrocentricity is best understood as a paradigm, consisting of three distinct, but related aspects, the affective/cognitive/conative, structural, and functional. A collection of essays focusing on the intellectual dimensions of afrocentricity. Index, refs, v, 293pp, USA. AFRICA WORLD PRESS, 1592210171

Prof Bethwell A. Ogot is one of the leading pioneer scholars in African history, and has organized numerous seminars and workshops on the same. He headed the Historical Association of Kenya, and was at one time president of the UNESCO funded 'General History of Africa', a project formulated to reconstruct the history of Africa. Through the use of oral traditions, Ogot and his contemporaries such as Jan Vansina, J Anene and S A Diop demonstrated that the history of the continent was as rich and invigorating as the history of the rest of the world. Consequently they contested the Eurocentric hegemony of African history. Second volume of papers and articles from the respected academic covering a wide range of issues. A critical examination of Maat, the moral ideal in ancient Egypt, presenting it in the language of modern moral discourse. Maat is the moral ideal of ancient Egypt whose texts contain information on Egypt's moral standards, its concepts of right from wrong, codes of behaviour and obligations. Written by a teacher of the tradition of Maat, this study is the `first philosophical book that is based on a philologically and historically critical treatment of first-hand Egyptian material'. Focusing on the Maatian ideal rather than moral practices, Karenga discusses what Maat is and its place within the genre of philosophical ethics and morality, asking what it can contribute to modern African culture and values. and Philosophy is a systematic study of the attitudes of mind and belief that
have evolved in the many societies of Africa. In this second edition, Dr Mbiti
has updated his material to include the involvement of women in religion, and
the potential unity to be found in what was once thought to be a mass of quite
separate religions.
Mbiti adds a new
dimension to the understanding of the history, thinking, and life throughout
the African continent. Religion is approached from an African point of view
but is as accessible to readers who belong to non-African societies as it is
to those who have grown up in African nations. Since its first publication, this book has become acknowledged as the standard work in the field of study, and it is essential reading for anyone concerned with African religion, history, philosophy, anthropology or general African studies.
