AFRICAN PHILOSOPHY

"the crucial difference [between traditional African folk philosophy and philosophy proper] is that the Western philosopher tries to argue for his thesis, clarifying his meaning and answering objections, known or anticipated; whereas the transmitter of folk conceptions merely says "This is what our ancestors said."" Image Not AvailableAfrican Philosophy And The Quest For Autonomy:
A Philosophical Investigation: A Philosophical Investigation.

Praeg, Leonhard
Explores what is meant by African philosophy and then applies this to the context of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission.
As academic subject African philosophy is predominantly concerned with epistemology. It aims at re-presenting a lost body of authentic African thought. This apparently austere a-historical concern is framed by a grand narrative of liberation that cannot but politicise the quest for epistemological autonomy. By "politicise" I mean that the desire to re-cover an authentic African epistemology in order to establish African philosophy as autonomous subject, ironically re-iterates Western, enlightenment notions of the autonomous subject.

Book Cover African Philosophy As Cultural Inquiry
(Published in Association With the International African Institute, London; African Systems of Thought)

Ivan Karp;
In 10 probing essays by distinguished African, European, and American scholars, African Philosophy as Cultural Inquiry examines the role of African philosophy at the opening of the new millennium. Here philosophy cuts across disciplinary boundaries to embrace ideas taken from history, literary studies, anthropology, and art. Addressing topics such as the progress of philosophical discourse, knowledge and modes of thought, the relevance of philosophy for cultures that are still largely based on traditional values, and the meaning of philosophy to cultures and individuals in the process of modernization, this volume presents today's best thinking about the concerns and practices that constitute African experience.

AFRICA'S QUEST FOR A PHILOSOPHY OF DECOLONIZATION

Africa's Quest for a Philosophy of Decolonization
(Value Inquiry Book Series 153)

Kebede, Messay

This book discovers freedom in the colonial idea of African primitiveness. As human transcendence, freedom escapes the drawbacks of otherness, as defended by ethnophilosophy, while exposing the idiosyncratic inspiration of Eurocentric universalism. Decolonization calls for the reconnection with freedom, that is, with myth-making understood as the inaugural act of cultural pluralism. The cultural condition of modernization emerges when the return to the past deploys the future.

A clear presentation and thoughtful evaluation of each of the main schools in African philosophy.

THE AFROCENTRIC PARADIGM

The Afrocentric Paradigm
Ama Mazama;(Ed.)

This book focuses on the intellectual dimension of Afrocentricity, which has aroused a great deal of interest since its inception, but has remained clouted with theoretical confusion. Writing from an Afrocentric perspective, the contributors to the volume argue that Afrocentricity is best understood as a paradigm, consisting of three distinct, but related aspects, the affective/cognitive/conative, structural, and functional.

A collection of essays focusing on the intellectual dimensions of afrocentricity. Index, refs, v, 293pp, USA. AFRICA WORLD PRESS, 1592210171

BUILDING ON THE INDIGENOUS:
Selected Essays 1981-1998

Ogot, Bethwell A.

Prof Bethwell A. Ogot is one of the leading pioneer scholars in African history, and has organized numerous seminars and workshops on the same. He headed the Historical Association of Kenya, and was at one time president of the UNESCO funded 'General History of Africa', a project formulated to reconstruct the history of Africa. Through the use of oral traditions, Ogot and his contemporaries such as Jan Vansina, J Anene and S A Diop demonstrated that the history of the continent was as rich and invigorating as the history of the rest of the world. Consequently they contested the Eurocentric hegemony of African history.

The Moral Ideal in Ancient Egypt Book reviewMaat, the Moral Ideal in Ancient Egypt:
A Study in Classical African Ethics (Africanstudies-History, Politics, Economics and Culture)

Karenga, Maulana

A critical examination of Maat, the moral ideal in ancient Egypt, presenting it in the language of modern moral discourse. Maat is the moral ideal of ancient Egypt whose texts contain information on Egypt's moral standards, its concepts of right from wrong, codes of behaviour and obligations. Written by a teacher of the tradition of Maat, this study is the `first philosophical book that is based on a philologically and historically critical treatment of first-hand Egyptian material'. Focusing on the Maatian ideal rather than moral practices, Karenga discusses what Maat is and its place within the genre of philosophical ethics and morality, asking what it can contribute to modern African culture and values. Extracts are transcribed and translated

THOUGHT AND PRACTICE IN AFRICAN PHILOSOPHY

THOUGHT AND PRACTICE IN AFRICAN PHILOSOPHY
Presley, Gail M.; Smith, Daniel; Abuja, Pamela A. & Narrate, Oriole

These twenty five papers delivered at the University of Nairobi's intercontinental conference for African Philosophy and Studies presents a vast array of philosophical ideas being generated in East Africa. Topics addressed include modern environmental ethics, the theory and practice of democracy and the status of women within African society. Notes, refs, xiii, 324pp, KENYA,

ns and Philosophy is a systematic study of the attitudes of mind and belief that have evolved in the many societies of Africa. In this second edition, Dr Mbiti has updated his material to include the involvement of women in religion, and the potential unity to be found in what was once thought to be a mass of quite separate religions.

Mbiti adds a new dimension to the understanding of the history, thinking, and life throughout the African continent. Religion is approached from an African point of view but is as accessible to readers who belong to non-African societies as it is to those who have grown up in African nations.

Since its first publication, this book has become acknowledged as the standard work in the field of study, and it is essential reading for anyone concerned with African religion, history, philosophy, anthropology or general African studies.

Cultural Universals and Particulars: An African Perspective (African Systems of Thought)
Kwasi Wiredu;
The eminent Ghanaian philosopher Kwasi Wiredu confronts the paradox that while Western cultures recoil from claims of universality, previously colonized peoples, seeking to redefine their identities, insist on cultural particularities. Wiredu's exposition of the principles of African traditional philosophy is not purely theoretical; he shows how certain aspects of African political thought may be applied to the practical resolution of some of Africa's most pressing problems.

Book CoverAfrican Philosophy in Search of Identity (African Systems of Thought)
D.A. Masolo;
Masolo has written perhaps the best encyclopedic account of 20th century African philosophy. His exploration of the problem of articulating reason in the African context, a context burdened by the imposition of colonialism, racism, and the perils and anxiety of metaphilosophical reflections on philosophy (epistemologically, ontologically, and politically understood) is balanced and erudite.
